A good performance for Giampaolo Caruso in the road race of the Italian National Championships: Katusha Team’s rider took the fourth place after a nice competition, where he ended between the firsts. The race, a 254 kilometers long route, was characterized in its first part by a strong weather. The first favorite to try the attack is Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) that tried a good action in the uphill of Telve, 30 kilometers to the finishing line. At his shoulders, Liquigas-Cannondale leaded the group in order to close the gap and work for his leader, Vincenzo Nibali. In the end, their work managed to take Nibali and Moreno Moser together with Scarponi: Franco Pellizzotti (Androni-Venezuela), Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago-ISF), Danilo Di Luca (Acqua&Sapone) and Giampaolo Caruso stayed with the Liquigas-Cannondale duo, and composed the group ahead. As soon as the last lap started, Pellizzotti left the group thanks to a strong action, taking in a while around 30”: the first chasing group, instead, didn’t manage to answer and was subjected to a good selection, when only Moser, Di Luca and Caruso stayed in the chase. Despite the good work of the three, Pellizzotti managed to resist and won the National Championships; in the sprint for the podium, Caruso didn’t manage to enter in the top-three despite he was one of the protagonist all day long. Second position for Di Luca, while Moser was third.
