Dani Moreno encored yesterday’s win in “Vuelta a Burgos”: after the great victory in stage 1, Katusha Team’s rider from Madrid took an extraordinary win in stage 2, from Burgos to Burgos, 141 kilometers long. Moreno was the fastest in the final uphill, Alto de Castillo, a 3rdcategory climbing that the riders faced three times today. The race was characterized by an early breakaway, happened after 20 kilometers from the start: Romain Sicard (Euskaltel-Euskadi), David Belda (Burgos BH), Ramirez Bee (Andalucia), Aritz Etxebarria (Orbea) and Carlos Verona (Burgos BH) tried their luck but the chasing group, often leaded by Katusha Team, managed to keep the escape under control, staying 2’ far at most. With 14 kilometers to go the breakaway was neutralized: many teams prepare the final uphill sprint for their leaders, as many wanted to win in Alto del Castillo, where Joaquim Rodriguez won last year. But it’s Purito himself to make the deciding action: the leader of Katusha Team leaded the group in the last kilometer and imposed an incredible pace to the others, closely slipstreamed by his teammate Moreno. Then, Moreno took advantage of this great work with one of his usual, powerful rushes: nobody could be faster than him, and the rider from Madrid raised his arms for another victory. Second position for Sergio Luis Henao (Sky), 2’’ far from the winner; while Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge) completed the daily podium, 7’’ far from the first position. In general classification, after two wins in a row, Moreno is the leader, 2’’ ahead of Henao and 9’’ ahead of Breschel (Rabobank).
“I want to thank my teammates – said the Spanish rider – they allowed me to be in fourth, fifth position when the last climbing started. Especially Purito was incredible: he was great when he launched my sprint, he imposed a very tough pace, and I had to do nothing but doing my best in the last 300 meters. Actually these stages were very suitable to my characteristics, but I admit I’m very satisfied with my shape in this period. Tomorrow should be for sprinters, but the day after tomorrow there will be the stage I won last year: since we did a great job until now, we can try to encore the victory in general classification after Joaquim’s win in 2011”.
