Joaquim Rodriguez again enchanted the Spanish audience with another of his incredible performance: in the terrible uphill of Mirador de Erazo, with the finishing line at the end of 2 kilometers with an average pendence of 13% and a highest of almost 23%, ‘Purito’ proved to be the strongest today with a great rush that knew no rivals. Only Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) tried to resist, but in the end he had to give up and content of a second position, 8” far from the winner; Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) completed the podium 13” far, while Christopher Froome (Sky), the other rival for general classification, was fifth, 23” behind, just like Daniel Moreno, 6th. Thanks to this great victory, Rodriguez has now 13” over Contador, 51” over Froome and 1’20” over Valverde.
“I’m very happy with this win – said ‘Purito’ – it was really a hard stage, where the team worked great keeping under control the breakaway and taking me to the final rush in the best position: Moreno, especially, was incredible and brought me until the last kilometer. I’m very happy to be still in red jersey and to improve the gap, but nothing is still decided: the competition is still long, with very hard stages, and everybody can have a bad day and drop, coming out of the fight for general classification. My shape is great, people supports me a lot: I will try for sure to keep the jersey until Madrid, even if it will be difficult”.
